Yugoslavia, Algeria, the UN: Serbian director Mila Turajlić traces the birth of the non-aligned movement in the era of decolonisation using previously unseen film archives
As a cameraman, Stevan Labudovic followed Tito (president for life of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia) on his official travels during the birth of the Non-Aligned Movement advocating decolonisation. Sent to Algeria as a gesture of Yugoslav solidarity to make a film about the Algerian struggle, he spent three years with the National Liberation Army. Between 1959 and 1962, he shot almost 83 kilometres of film. Long forgotten and ignored by the French, these images come to us now thanks to the archives of the Yugoslav Newsreels agency and thanks to Serbian director Mila Turajlić herself, who plunges us into the heart of an epic battle of images where cinema gives voice to a world in the midst of decolonisation.
BIOGRAPHY | A Belgrade-born documentary filmmaker, scriptwriter, political scientist and producer, Mila Turajlić is fascinated by those archive documents that simultaneously capture both personal and national memories. Taking forms ranging from lecture-performances to video art and analytical essays, her productions reactivate the forgotten passages of history.
