On the seventh floor of the Splendid’s Hotel, seven gangsters hold out, surrounded by the police. Under the approving gaze of a cop who has betrayed his side, the gang stands fast, fending off the final assault. The author creates a space-time with no possible escape. The play pulsates like an echo to Genet’s only film, Un Chant d’amour, in which the masturbatory acts of prison inmates are filmed while a guard looks on with voyeuristic pleasure. The play also echoes La Dame aux camélias, created by Arthur Nauzyciel earlier this year, for what it says about the relationship between power and the body, desire and crime.
