Galina Ustvolskaya, the sole pupil of Dmitri Shostakovich, was a pianist who sought purity in art. Forgotten by history because she was a woman, this composer is reborn on stage thanks to Silvia Costa.
The Italian artist gives us six sonatas transformed into images, sounds, words, atmospheres and states of being. The radical energy of the musician is balanced by the simplicity of the set: on stage, nothing more than a bed and a piano, resonating with the Russian quest to strip things back to the essence.
Silvia Costa creates performances that are visual, poetic and allusive, mixing dance, theatre, music, performance and installation. Her pieces walk the margins of the ordinary and exist in unstable spaces. She appeared at TNB in 2020 in Pascal Rambert’s Trois annonciations.
