From a trivial news item, which in its own time grabbed the headlines, Fassbinder creates a tragedy from the life of Geesche Gottfried, an 18th century German woman from the very conservative petty bourgeoisie. Geesche emerges from the historical character as a full-blown activist in the struggle for women’s rights. The celebrated actress, Valérie Dréville, who starred in Récit d’un homme inconnu by Anatoli Vassiliev last season at the TNB, is Geesche, one of the great female characters created by Fassbinder alongside Petra von Kant, Lola, Maria Braun, and others.

Stage director and actor, Cédric Gourmelon, trained at the TNB School of Dramatic Art (1994-1997). Since then he has created a number of shows, including Au bord du gouffre based on David Wojnarowicz’s memoir (Mettre en Scène 2013), Tailleur pour dames by Georges Feydeau (2016), and Haute Surveillance by Jean Genet at the Comédie-Française (2017).
