Né sourd et gallois, Jonny Cotsen se lance dans un seul en scène facétieux et émouvant pour évoquer son expérience et lever quelques incompréhensions auprès des entendants.
Avant de monter sur scène, Jonny Cotsen a tourné et retourné la question de la surdité de bien des manières : d’abord en l’expérimentant de façon intime à mesure qu’il était confronté à un monde qui entend mais n’écoute pas ; ensuite en développant une activité de consultant dans le milieu de l’art pour sensibiliser à ces questions.
De ce parcours est né Louder Is Not Always Clearer (Plus fort ne veut pas toujours dire plus clair) où il déroule ses expériences en matière d’éducation, de foot, de sexe ou encore de clubbing. Jonny Cotsen le fait avec des mots, car comme beaucoup d’enfants sourds, on l’a forcé à apprendre la parole, mais aussi avec l’écriture en direct et la langue des signes. Avec un accent, un style et un humour so british, il évoque aussi ces entendants qui ont tendance à le prendre pour un demeuré.

Born deaf (and Welsh), artist Jonny Cotsen made this mischievous and moving one-man show to talk about his personal experiences and dispel some misunderstandings among hearing people.
Even before taking to the stage, Jonny Cotsen was turning perceptions of deafness on their head: first, in his personal life as he was confronted with a world that hears but doesn't listen; later, through developing a consultancy to raise awareness of access issues in the art world. Drawing on both, Louder Is Not Always Clearer is a show where he shares his experiences of education, football, sex and clubbing. Cotsen uses words on stage, because like many deaf children he was forced to learn to speak, but also live writing and sign language.
With his distinctive British accent, style and humour, he also talks about those hearing people who take him for a fool.

Gareth Clark est metteur en scène gallois. Issu des beaux-arts, Jonny Cotsen est aujourd'hui comédien, engagé à réunir des personnes sans et avec handicap, à travers des séminaires et ateliers de théâtre.
