Unwanted is a harrowing testimony to violence against women in times of war and examines, in particular, the weaponization of rape. The dancer and choreographer Dorothée Munyaneza was 12 years old when she escaped genocide and fled her native Rwanda. She portrayed the ravages of the time in her first creation, Samedi Détente.
For Unwanted, she sought out the wounded victims of war-time rape and asked one question: “Have you managed to accept yourself?” For this new creation, she is accompanied by the musical improviser Alain Mahé, the musician Holland Andrews and the plastic artist Bruce Clarke.
