Earthy and organic, staccato and smooth, airborne and reptilian, liquid and bone dry – dance as conceived by Japanese choreographer Kaori Ito reveals the intense presence and contradictions of bodies. Their conflicted relationship with the ground but also their capacity to take flight. Their dazzling aliveness and their sudden stillness. In Chers, Ito’s dance becomes an offering to the dead, inspired by letters the artist wrote to departed loved ones. Joining forces with the actor Delphine Lanson (who also dances in the show), Ito stretches her dance like a fine thread between the here and the beyond. Each step, each gesture and contortion, summons ghosts – and yet there is nothing morbid about it. On the contrary, Chers is a performance which affirms that the dead and the living can coexist within the unique space-time of the dance stage.

ABOUT

A Japanese dancer and choreographer living in France, Kaori Ito is steeped in Japanese culture and trained in Western technique. Over the years she has developed her own unique hybrid vocabulary: working at the intersection of cultures and languages, she is interested in the invisible and the unsaid. She has collaborated, notably, with Angelin Preljocaj, Alain Platel, Philippe Decouflé, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Denis Podalydès or Guy Cassiers.
