Fascinated by the strangeness and transgression of street carnivals, Marlene Monteiro Freitas presents a very personal interpretation of the early 5th century BC play The Bacchae by Euripides. She interweaves this work and the sacred dances of Antiquity with her own artistic hallucinations. With her 13 performers —actors, dancers, musicians— she delivers an bewitching orgiastic bacchanal. Born in Cap-Verde, Monteiro Freitas trained by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. She approaches choreography as an art of energy, close to physical theater. She pushes physical exuberance to the extreme. Animality and a raw expression of emotion lie at the heart of her work.
