Yves-Noël Genod appropriates Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs du mal, that grand and scandalous collection of poems about desire and sex, melancholy and death, censored in its day. The audience is submerged in total darkness, fully exposed to the text. Genod delivers a reading of rare intensity, his voice sensitive and powerful, shedding “a magical and supernatural light on the natural obscurity of things”. He cleaves to Baudelaire’s text: “for I seek emptiness, darkness and nudity!”. The black box of the theater becomes an intimate space with the breath of this poet-actor whose wondrous charm brings the inexpressible to words.
