Just how far will someone go for love?

Bess, the wife of Jan, places no limits on her devotion, even if it means offending morality and defying her religion. When her husband, paralysed in an accident, asks her to detach herself and cheat on him with other men, she takes up the task, returning to tell him of nights spent with unknown bodies. Adapted from the screenplay by filmmaker Lars von Trier, this story of total sacrifice seems to go against the tenets of female emancipation by creating a character who uses and abuses her body as she sees fit. Staged by Myriam Muller in a set of glass panels and sheer walls that serve as screens for live projected video, Breaking the Waves is an emotive drama where feelings are expressed with a stark brutality.

Myriam Muller is a stage director, an actor, and the artistic director of Théâtre du Centaure in Luxembourg. She plays regularly for Marja-Leena Junker: La Mouette (2011), Orphelins (2014), Partage de midi (2015) and Hedda Gabler in 2020.
