6 South African performers, dressed and coiffed according to the Zulu tradition, metamorphose into the rickshaws that marked choreographer Robyn Orlin’s childhood.

The spectacle of Zulu pushers and pullers racing each other in the streets of Durban, South Africa is a sight that Robyn Orlin has never forgotten. In this performance she brings the memory back to life with the help of 6 young people from Moving into Dance, one of the earliest mixed-race dance companies in Johannesburg. Underneath the colourful beadwork, monumental headdresses, crazy tempos, and powerful chanting, the performance denounces the colonial past of a country that was divided between oppressors and oppressed, and that forced black people into deplorable working conditions. The piece is a tribute to those exploited workers, whose grace did not escape the notice of the young Robyn.

Originally from South Africa, Robyn Orlin is an internationally renowned artist whose work integrates text, video, and visual art. In 2018, Oh Louis..., performed by former Paris Opera danseur étoile Benjamin Pech, was presented at the Opéra de Rennes as part of the Festival TNB.
