How to breathe easier in a society threatened by catastrophe? By watching the forest and allowing oneself to be watched by it. The COVID-19 pandemic and its ongoing impact have made this piece by Alexis Fichet and Nicolas Richard no less than a public service. The 2 artists read and speak on stage; behind them a deep forest is projected, in which can be glimpsed their (equally curious and literary) doppelgangers. In order to resist the ambient pessimism, on a quest to regain space and oxygen, Alexis Fichet and Nicholas Richard set off on a stationary voyage, one that takes them from author to author and down the deepest of wooded trails. These are paths that criss-cross extraordinary landscapes, carrying us far from asphalt roads and the urban frenzy, far from all the constraints that suffocate us. For there are writers who know how to watch (and to be watched by) forests. Ecologists, philosophers and anthropologists, from Bruno Latour to Carlos Castaneda, from Henry David Thoreau to Anna Tsing, have imagined other ways of being in the world – alternative modes of existence where the superfluous is replaced by the essential.

Nicolas Richard and Alexis Fichet are among the 6 founders of the Rennes-based company Lumière d’août. In 2010, Alexis Fichet created Hamlet and the something pourri at TNB during the Mettre en scène festival.
