In Limbo, Victor de Oliveira makes a journey through his personal history — that of a mixed-race man born in Mozambique in 1971.

His grandfathers are white European, his grandmothers black Mozambican and Indian. His great-grandparents were Jewish-Portuguese, Mozambican- Makonde, Goa Indian, and Cantonese- Chinese. If today Victor de Oliveira is proud of his multiple identities, this was not always the case. This intimate show touches on issues of mixed race identity, slavery, colonialism, origins, and exile. Breaking free from linear retelling, it is a solo performance that assembles a mosaic of personal memories, interviews, readings, and encounters. An autobiographical and collective fiction in which the actor, author and director questions the reasons for denialism, the dispute of collective memory, and the experience of growing up in uncertainty.

Victor de Oliveira was born in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. He spent his teenage years in Portugal, where he began acting, and is now settled in Paris. He has performed for Stanislas Nordey and Wajdi Mouawad, whose Incêndios he directed with a troupe of Mozambican artists (presented at TNB in 2021).
