Shakespeare’s Richard III reinvented by director Vincent Macaigne, the turbulent genius of French theatre.
The figure of Richard III, King of England, a lame hunchback driven by his thirst for authority to kill all who opposed him, becomes the embodiment of the madness of power. Vincent Macaigne transforms Shakespeare’s play into an amalgam of comedy and tragedy, both cruel and tender. Whether he is faithful (or not)
to the original plot, Macaigne looks for the deeper meanings hidden beneath its tragic events. He sees Richard as a familiar figure. The kind of person we bump into every day at work, or listen to in political debates. If this man is a monster, isn’t he the symptom of a sick society?
BIOGRAPHY | Associate artist at TNB and a respected cinema auteur, Vincent Macaigne is the kind of director who is all too rare in theatre – one who dares to stage explosive, unrestrained adaptations of the great texts. This latest work continues Macaigne’s encounter with Shakespeare by following Au moins j’aurai laissé un beau cadavre (2011), his version of Hamlet.
