3 performers trying to pass as mermaids surface in a vivarium in this zany, acerbic and entertaining show.

Imagine a vivarium where 3 performers are doing their best to become mermaids. As their transformation begins, a stream of questions emerges. First: from where comes the legend of these aquatic women, who sing so beautifully but are lumbered with a giant fishtail ? Then: how do we escape the moral frameworks handed down to us by such myths ? Because our imaginations may still be shaped by the legacies of age-old stories, and the mermaid, whether ancient or contemporary, is always being told what to do. (In Sirènes by the pushy, moustachioed animal tamer, or the experts who insist on speaking first.) Smoke, music, make-up, lights — this crossing of appearances is scathing but poetic and funny.

Hélène Bertrand, Margaux Desailly and Blanche Ripoche are actors and directors from Rennes who together form Cie 52 Hertz. They create collectively for the stage by working with women on texts by contemporary female authors.
