L'ENCYCLOPÉDISTE

ENCYCLOPÉDIE DE LA PAROLE / FRÉDÉRIC DANOS

A solo performance that dives into the inner workings of language and speech, tracing lines of connection and giving voice to the hidden meanings of words.

To talk can seem like the most natural thing in the world. But what does it really mean to speak ? This question is explored with dry humour by the performance poet Frédéric Danos. Alone on stage, he enters a labyrinth of speech. Words pile on top of one another like the twigs of a nest, draw together in meticulous sentences, or flow in waves that criss-cross the space between speaker and listener — a fusion of geometry, physics, and natural forms. Punctuated by sounds collected from everyday life (a friend’s message on an answering machine, a monologue on a metro platform, an extract of a radio broadcast, a pronunciation exercise in Portuguese), the show skims lightly across the surface of speech itself. This playful and erudite performance is part of the project Encyclopédie de la parole.

Since 2007, a collective of poets, performers, visual artists, musicians, and stage directors has been collecting sounds as part of the Encyclopédie de la parole. So far more than 1 000 samples have been collected and used in shows, performances and lectures.
