Adapted from Valérie Mréjen’s story of the same name, L’Agrume scatters its reminiscences and points of view like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle mapping out the memory of love. A funny, offbeat investigation in search of lost time.
It’s the story of a story: Valérie meets Bruno, with whom she wants, with all her heart, to live as a couple. But he’d ‘rather not’ and so the couple break up. Some time later, the lover revisits this episode, presented in an uncertain chronology formed of notes, juicy anecdotes, and the smallest traces of the past. Somewhere between the naïve and the humorous, L’Agrume is the story of an investigation full of discrepancies, gaps and guesses.
In their working method, director Mélissa Barbaud and actor Marie-Bénédicte Cazeneuve have embraced the fragmented and patchy nature of their story by scattering it across myriad post-it notes and then piecing it back together from memory. These small sticky squares fill the stage like so many pieces of a jigsaw puzzle that the audience are invited to piece together as they remember clues and connect the dots. L’Agrume’s quirky vision and playful relationship with time are a perfect microcosm of the work of Valérie Mréjen, writer, director, visual artist, and associate artist at TNB.
