The first part of a diptych on buried memories, this ‘documented fiction’ explores the repercussions of war on the intimate relationship between France and Algeria.
When Joséphine Serre happens upon documents and a wallet in her letterbox, she discovers the life of Amer M., construction worker born in Kabylia in 1932 and exiled to Paris at the start of the Algerian War in 1954. Her exploration of these archive fragments leads her to formulate hypotheses that are at once plausible and uncertain. Who is Amer M. and what is he telling us about the world today? Serre sets off to the other side of the Mediterranean to investigate. Two crossings later, Amer has become the hero of a fiction that has grown beyond him. A voice shaken by the resurgence of memory, recounting the passionate bond between two countries naturally unitedyet separated by history.
BIOGRAPHY | Founder of the company L’Instant propice, artist, director and actor Joséphine Serre often works with memories that reappear in the present, using personal archives to shift and recompose our reading of the past.
