DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS

HARRY KÜMEL / BARÐI JÓHANNSSON

ciné-concert

Coproduction

Creation at the TNB (February 2022)

The TNB and Clair Obscur invite the Icelandic composer and musician Barði Jóhannsson to create a cinema screening with live music around Daughters of Darkness, a cult vampire film from the 1970s, directed by Harry Kümel.

Restored last year by the distributor Malavida Films, Daughters of Darkness reinvents the myth of Countess Elisabeth Bathory. Valerie and Stefan, stranded in Ostend, stay in a vast, deserted hotel in the off-season. The couple meets the worrying Countess Bathory and her protégée Ilona, dark creatures of the night. Insidiously, they bewitch first the young man, fascinated by mysterious murders perpetrated in the region, then Valerie, intrigued by the strange relationship that unites the 2 women...

A female fantasy, a vampire countess played by the divine Delphine Seyrig, eroticism, esotericism, blood, tears and the deserted beach of Ostend, all accompanied by a soundtrack by Barði Jóhannsson. After Benjamin Christensen's Häxan, Barði Jóhannsson, accompanied by his musicians, tackles the poetic and bewitching work of Harry Kümel.
