COVOITURAGE

Two days before the opening of Francis Bacon’s first retrospective in France at the Grand Palais, his lover and model, George Dyer, commits suicide.

Grand Palais is a show about creation and its ghosts, about the hold a creator has over his subject. It is also the story of a lover who, by committing suicide, becomes a vampire to his Pygmalion, sealing a morbid reversal that binds together dead and living.
Julien Gaillard and Frédéric Vossier’s text is a close duet, placing the words of Francis Bacon, played by Arthur Nauzyciel, alongside those of George Dyer, incarnated by Guillaume Costanza. On one side, the distress of the suicide victim. On the other, the anguish of the survivor whose conscience is torn between vanity and guilt. The alternating voices illuminate the two figures, amplified by the ghostly presence of musician and singer Richard Comte.

BIOGRAPHY | Pascal Kirsch directed his first show in 2001. In 2015, he staged Hans Henny Jahnn’s Pauvreté, Richesse, Homme et Bête (presented at TNB in 2017), and in 2017 his version of Maeterlinck’s La Princesse Maleine appeared at Avignon Festival. In 2021, he adapted and directed Stanisław Lem’s novel Solaris for the Théâtre des Quartiers d’Ivry.
