Quai ouest – urban no man’s land, crash site for the casualties of liberalism, and last frontier between civilisation and savagery.
Director Ludovic Lagarde breathes life into Bernard-Marie Koltès’ text, and with it a 1980s New York where the glittering luxury of Wall Street sits side by side with the misery of the downtrodden. Money has society in its grip. AIDS is on the prowl. Maurice Koch, driving a Jaguar, wants to kill himself in the dark waters of the river. In the Quai ouest, he discovers the immigrant Charles with his little sister and parents. Abad, an undocumented African, who says not a word. Fak, the pragmatist.
On stage, the characters are torn between the will to live and a disintegrating world. The question of Quai ouest is whether utopia is possible.
