Creation at the TNB (February 2022)

TNB and Clair Obscur have invited the Icelandic musician and composer Barði Jóhannsson to create a film-concert for Daughters of Darkness, a cult vampire flick from the 1970s directed by Harry Kümel.

Restored last year by the distributor Malavida Films, Daughters of Darkness is a modern take on the myth of Countess Elisabeth Bathory. Valerie and Stefan, stranded in Ostend, stay at a vast deserted hotel during the off-season. There they soon encounter two mysterious creatures of the night: the unsettling Countess Bathory and her protegee Illona. Insidiously, they bewitch first the young Stefan, fascinated by the mysterious murders perpetrated in the region, and then Valerie, intrigued by the strange relationship that binds the two women together.

Eroticism and the esoteric, blood and tears, the deserted Ostend beach, and a vampiric countess played by the divine Delphine Seyrig.

After Benjamin Christensen's Häxan, Barði Jóhannsson tackles Harry Kümel's poetic and bewitching work, whose fascinating soundtrack was created by François de Roubaix. He composes and performs a new soundtrack on stage, accompanied by a violinist and a cellist.
