A homage to a voice that was rooted in Bretagne, this production is a tribute to Yann-Fañch Kemener as a conduit for the ancient sounds of Gwerz, Soniou, and Kan ha diskan.
As a true ethnologist, this Armorican singer drew from the rich heritage of Breton music. He was a poet, and his final album Roudennoù (‘traces’ or ‘ways’ in Breton) pays homage to the region’s poetry and its writers. Yann-Fañch Kemener was recognised several times with the Académie Charles Cros’ grand prize for heritage: for the album Chants profonds de Bretagne in 1982 and Ar Baradoz in 2018. In the theatre, he appeared alone on stage, directed by Madeleine Louarn, in a tribute to the Breton poet Armand Robin.
He visited TNB several times over the years, appearing in concert with Aldo Ripoche in 2005 and 2007, with the group Barzaz in 2013, and for Nous irons pleurer sur vos ombres in 2015.
