How can Western theater, cloaked in obsolescence, and the thousand-year-old art of Japanese Noh be combined in a vibrant artistic relationship? Simon Gauchet orchestrates a confrontation between the artificial and the living. Simon Gauchet first met Tatsushige Udaka in 2008, still a young Noh actor at the time. Tatsushiga willingly shared his knowledge of this ancestral art form with Simon.
The Tree Experiment was imagined in the Fall of 2018 when Simon was in artist residency at the Villa Kujoyama, Kyoto, Japan. In this very visual show, images matter as much as words. The narrative unfolds in an anxietyinducing, ecological setting. It argues with brio that even if a tree bends and sometimes snaps, it always grows back.
