The South-African choreographer Robyn Orlin assumes the figure of Louis XIV, the Dancing King, while bringing to awareness the fate of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to arrive on Europe’s shores. A patron of the arts and letters, Louis XIV instructed Colbert to pen the “Code Noir”, defining the conditions of slavery in the French colonial empire. These very rules give pace to the performance of Benjamin Pech, the former leading dancer of the Paris Opera, as he merges into the body of the king. He is accompanied by Loris Barrucand, harpsichordist cum servant, in this sumptuous and ironical evocation.
