Marching Band Project is a hymn to a diverse and ephemeral community of marchers who know neither boundaries nor labels. Visiting Rennes, this itinerant project, led by visual artist Frédéric Nauczyciel, the American voguer Marquis Revlon, and the musical director Sylvain Cartigny, takes the exact opposite approach to limitation and confinement. For this latest edition, the core trio is joined by Clément Le Goff, a Rennes-based artist and ambassador of traditional Breton culture. With representatives from the United States and France, they create a living, participatory form with a completely transcultural essence: a marching band that reinvents itself according to where it plays, which transforms whatever it crosses, and which unites its marchers through an ethos of surpassing difference (whether in artistic discipline, age, culture or gender).
The presentation in Rennes will be unique to the city. The 4 artists have worked together at the intersection of marching culture, baroque music, Breton culture and voguing (performance born in Harlem in the black American transgender community, which is inspired by the poses of models on the cover of magazines such as Vogue, and which allows an appropriation of the signs of the fashion world from which the community is excluded), to create, with the inclusion of local amateur artists, Marching Band Roazhon Project. There will remain after each intervention an installation which is at the same time the trace and the continuation of the parades.
