The idea for Contretemps originated when composer Bruno Allary invited TNB’s associate historian, Professor Patrick Boucheron of the Collège de France, and flutist Isabelle Courroy, to imagine a live performance, combining rational thought and artistic feeling in an original form of expression. Staged by Laurent Gachet, the dramatized performance envelopes the reflections of the historian in a web of music. In this atmospheric setting, combining visual excursions into the period, Patrick Boucheron’s spoken words achieve an unprecedented fullness. This intense dialogue between the spoken word, music and theatrical space, results in a profound meditation on time. What is past comes down to us in its passing.
