James wants to find out the truth about what happened one night in a Leeds hotel between his wife Stella and Bill, both dress designers. While Bill lives in Harry’s posh house in Belgravia, a swanky part of London, Stella lives with James in a flat in Chelsea, an area full of artists. What is the true nature of Harry and Bill’s relationship? What is James really looking for? And what does Stella want? In this fascinating play, Harold Pinter takes us down several paths, creating a collection of interpretations. Offering both an outline and a puzzle, the plot has something of a crime novel about it. The four of them seem to
be searching for their own story. Their own memory.

These days we are supposed to see everything, hear everything and know everything in real time thanks to new technologies, and yet everything is still just as opaque. The more truth seems to be offered, the more lies seem to be peddled. What has become of these characters created by Pinter more than fifty years ago who seem to be hanging out in the modern city as if they were at the forefront of our ways of life?
