Mephisto {Rhapsodie} is freely adapted from Klaus Mann’s novel Mephisto. The plot showcases the career of an artist in pursuit of fame and glory in a Germany plagued, then devoured by Nazism. Mephisto {Rhapsodie} delves into the heart of the question of the ties between art and power, the theater and the state, politics and artists, and more broadly still, the question of life and compromise in a society under duress. How far are we prepared to go to prevent politics from upsetting our plans; to attain what we have sworn ourselves to achieve? What do we accept to turn a blind eye to? What do we accept not to condemn so that we can attend to our affairs as usual? Can we really resist and subvert a system from within? What happens when this system becomes more and more unbending, repressive and authoritarian? At what point is it necessary to change course, to escape and flee abroad and simply wander?

Written by Samuel Gallet and staged by Jean-Pierre Baro, Mephisto {Rhapsodie} will have its theatrical premiere in March 2019 at the TNB (Théâtre National de Bretagne) and then be available to tour.
